This article explains how to submit a screening request, complete the Universal application, and monitor the status of your background check from start to finish.
Before You Begin
Ensure you have the following before starting:
- Access to Exxat Prism using your university credentials.
- Your legal name exactly as it appears on a government-issued identification document.
- A valid email address to receive the Universal invitation email.
- A valid payment method if your screening package requires student payment.
Important
Use your legal name exactly as it appears on a government-issued identification document. Entering a name that does not match your ID may delay the processing and approval of your screening results.
Request a Background Check
- Log in to Exxat Prism using your university credentials.
- Open the Compliance section using one of the following methods:
- On the dashboard, locate the Compliance tile and select View All.
- From the hamburger menu, select Compliance.
- Under Mandatory Requirements, locate the Universal Background Check requirement, and in the Status column click Get Started.
- In the requirement details page, click the "+" icon next to Universal Details.
- In the panel that opens:
- Enter your First Name and Last Nmae
- Select the appropriate screening package.
- Verify your information.
- Select Request Screening.
Important
Ensure your legal name matches your government-issued identification document. Incorrect information may delay the screening process.

Confirm Submission, After the request is submitted:
- The document status changes to In Progress.
- The Universal status changes to Invitation Sent.
Complete the Universal Application
- In the Universal Background Check requirement details page, in the Step 1 Registration section , click Start Form Filling.

You will also receive an email from Universal. click on the link to complete the form. - Verify the Personal Invitation code.
- (Optional) Verify OTP.
Important
Only enter a OTP here if you received a verification otp in your email. If you did not get a otp, leave this field blank

Accept the message.
- If payment is required, submit the payment for the selected screening package and submit application.
Important
If your institution is configured as School Pay, the payment section will not be displayed.
- After submission, a confirmation page is displayed.
Important
Print or save the confirmation page for your records. Universal does not send a separate confirmation email after submission.
Track Background Check Status
After submitting your application, you can monitor the status from the Compliance section in Exxat Prism.
| Document Status | Universal Status | Description |
|---|---|---|
| In Progress | Invitation Sent | Screening request has been submitted and the invitation email has been sent. |
| In Progress | Pending Student Information | Universal is waiting for additional information from you. |
| In Progress | In Process | Universal has received your application and is processing the screening. |
| Pending Review | Complete | Screening results have been received and are awaiting review by your institution. |
| Approved | Complete | Screening results have been reviewed and approved. |
Drug Screening Dependency
If your institution requires both a Universal Background Check and a Universal Drug Screening:
- The Universal Background Check requirement may display a notification banner while the drug screening request is still pending.
- You may not be able to request an additional Universal Background Check until the Universal Drug Screening status changes to In Process.
Request an Additional Screening
To request another screening:
- Open the completed Universal Background Check requirement.
- Select Add New Record.
- Follow the same process described in the Request a Background Check section.
Troubleshooting

| 5 | My results have not been received after two weeks. | Contact Universal support at ExxatCS@universalbackground.com for assistance. |
| 6 | I do not see a payment section. | Your institution may be configured as School Pay. Contact your program administrator if you have questions. |
