This guide helps program administrators learn how to set up competency frameworks, map assessments to competencies, review student competency performance, and publish competency scores.
The guide also explains how competency scores and reports help programs monitor student progression and identify areas where additional support may be needed.
The Competency Framework Configuration and Management guide provides an overview of the competency management feature.
It provides a step-to-step guide on how to use the competency management feature.
To setup a competency framework, see Configure Competency Framework
To map assessments to a competency, see Map Competencies
To review students’ competency performance and view reports, see Review Students' Competency Performance.

Competency Management
Competency Based Education (CBE) in healthcare equips learners with the skills, knowledge, and attitudes essential for their professional roles. Unlike traditional time-based models, CBE emphasizes measurable outcomes and real-world application, ensuring healthcare professionals demonstrate competence in critical tasks.
By aligning education with patient care standards, CBE prepares providers to deliver safe, effective, and patient-centred care while bridging the gap between academic learning and clinical practice.
Recognizing its importance, accreditation bodies increasingly require schools to track students’ performance across various competencies.
Exxat Prism's Competency Management module allows users to track student's achievement of competencies across curriculum by aggregating data from multiple evaluations.
Exxat Prism's Competency Management offers a comprehensive solution in a simple 3 step process to help healthcare schools efficiently manage and monitor their students' competencies.
Administrators can control when to publish the competency score for the framework to the students.
Exxat Prism’s Competency Management offers the following options to effectively monitor and track the student’s competencies.
Things to Remember
Competency Framework
Configure one competency framework at a time.
Configure multiple competency frameworks for a competency.
Competency framework can be associated to multiple assessments.
Only assessments with a scoring-scale can be associated to the competency framework.
Scoring Scale
All competency scores are displayed using a standardized scale of 1–5 or the custom scale. This scale provides a consistent way for program administrators to review and interpret student performance across different courses, assessments, and clinical experiences.
Regardless of how the original scores are collected (for example, through course grades or assessment forms), the system converts those scores to a unified 1–5 scale or the custom scale. This allows programs to easily compare competency performance across students, courses, and clinical experiences.
Depending on how your competency setup is configured, the Review Grid and reports will display scores differently:
Experiential Setup: If the setup tracks only experiential competency, the grid displays the student’s experiential competency scores.
Didactic Setup: If the setup tracks only didactic competency, the grid displays the student’s didactic competency scores.
Both Didactic and Experiential Setup: If the setup tracks both types, you can switch between Didactic and Experiential scores using a dropdown on the Review Grid.
By default, the grid displays Experiential scores.
Competency Threshold
Programs can define Competency Threshold values for competencies to indicate the expected level of performance.
If a student’s score meets or exceeds the threshold, it indicates satisfactory competency progression.
If a student’s score falls below the threshold, it will be highlighted in reports so programs can quickly identify areas that may need attention.
Viewing Scores in Reports
When reviewing an individual student’s competency reports, you may see:
Didactic scores
Experiential scores
OrBoth scores displayed together (depending on your setup)
These reports help programs understand how students are progressing in each competency across coursework and clinical experiences.
Key Takeaways
All competency performance is presented on a standard 1–5 scale or a custom scale.
Scores may come from course grades, didactic assessments, or experiential evaluations, depending on how the competency setup is configured.
If your program tracks both didactic and experiential competency, you can view and analyze each type of score separately.
This standardized scoring approach helps programs consistently monitor student competency development and make informed decisions about student progression and support.
